Kingkev posed the question
"what one thing are you determined to do this weekend"?
My automatic response was "To enjoy myself" and that is what I fully intend to do, tomorrow at least.
Time has simply flown since I last visited Saltaire in October 08 for the
Jewel of Yorkshire event
J.O.Y (Isn't that a lovely abbreviation for a belly dance event) for that indeed is what it is for the scores of dancers who congregate in the grand Victoria Hall which was built in 1871 as the Home for the Saltaire Club and Institute.
The village of Saltaire is located 10 miles from Leeds and 5 miles from Bradford in West Yorkshire.
Saltaire is a model Victorian village built by wool baron Sir Titus Salt for his workers. The village comprises 22 streets, 850 houses, 45 Alms Houses and occupies an area of 25 acres. The streets carry the names of his wife, children and other family members.
There was a school, a hospital, Congregational and Methodist churches, Sunday school, park, bath, washhouses and railway station and because there were no public houses within the confines of the village, Salt built a Club and Institute for the moral and physical welfare of the community.
The village even had Its own fire station and a relic of those times is a Saltaire Fire Service plaque over the back door of 65 Albert Road. Most of the village remains just as it was when Salt died in 1876. In December 2001 Saltaire was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
It will be a different scene tomorrow once again when the rooms of Victoria Hall will be bustling with dancers of all abilities from the complete novice to the professional teachers, there will be workshops of the differing styles of belly dance happening all day, Tomorrow I have enrolled for an introduction to the 'Meleya Wrap technique'
Meleya Leff means the dance of the veil! It's a beautiful Folkloric Dance of women from Egyptian Nile Delta Region.
Meleya Leff, is a big piece of heavier fabric and decorated with ruffles or colorful palettes. It's like a heavy square veil. The dance took it's name from that piece of fabric.
Dancing with the Meleya Leff is flirtatious, bouncy, free and lot's of fun! In this workshop one learns how to be playful, flirty, how to wrap and use the Meleya Leff. Look at the little Youtube vid lower down at the side of my posts and see a cheeky performance of it.
It will be hilarious if nowt else seeing women of all ages, all shapes and sizes prancing around
In the evening the main hall is transformed into a concert room and all the top dancers who are teaching at the workshops put on a very entertaining evening of top dance performances!
As I said in the comment to Kev .....................
