  • But he's not English

23rd April is St. Georges Day. St. George is the Patron Saint of England however he wasn't English. It is believed he was born in Cappadocia( now Turkey) around the year 280 AD. Legend has it that there lived a dragon in the bay of Beirut (near the town of Silene) which terrorised the local population.

The story of George and the dragon is at least a thousand years old, and probably much older. It was part of an oral tradition, so its origins will probably never be known. George's image can be found on eastern churches, and he is the patron saint of, among other places, Greece, Georgia, Portugal, Genoa, Milan, Beirut, Malta, Ethiopia, Lithuania and Palestine as well as England.

Today though over HERE Popeye and Olive are celebrating St Georges day english style by dressing up and going for a pub lunch at a typical english inn.

It also happens to be Shakespeare's birthday so, in the words of the great bard

"And, most dear actors, eat no onions nor garlic, for we are to utter sweet breath."
William Shakespeare, A midsummer nights dream

  • And breathe!!

It is a glorious day and I have flung the house windows wide open to let the sun's rays and fresh air into the house.
T'old man is in the garden, repotting tomato plants and I should be getting ready to go out to my weekly dance class. It really is rather nice to be able to go and meet a group of friendly women with no ulterior motives but to have a dance and enjoy the ambience and the music.

Later today, my baby 'Bella' will be coming to stay the night, she wanted to travel over last week but I dissuaded her from doing so for tomorrow she and Lulu will be spending the weekend in Whitby as it is the weekend of the annual Goth festival.

They're not goths now (Lulu was a bit in the 1980's) but the event has so gained in popularity that people of all ages attend, some in Goth clothes and many in Victorian dress.
It will do the girls good to spend time together...they have a lot to talk about!

  • A Simple day

Today was always going to be a quiet day,
we went to the candle lit service at the local church last night which was really quite lovely with most of the readings and prayers being sung.
Then this morning I had a surprise as Lulu popped over and brought me a nice bunch of flowers.

"Do you want to go for a drive to the cemetery mam?" she enquired,
You see, she hadn't forgotten that today was the exact day seven years ago that my lovely ma had passed away.

So that is what we did..the weather was mild and we enjoyed each others company talking about this and that.
Naturally I took my digi camera with me and here is what I snapped.
    Isn't she lovely?

At the edge of the cemetery are some allotments and a field where a couple of shire horses are kept.
The horses were still there but they stayed at the top end of the field but here are a couple of photos I took on a previous visit.

    They came to say hello

  • from one year to the next

During Holy week last year I had the good fortune to be in Murcia watching the religious processions of the brotherhoods which take place every day for a week.

This week has been an odd kind of week but although I still managed to attend a candle lit service at the local church this evening the rest of the week is going to be a bit of a bind as I have only work shifts and hospital appointments in the offing,
still, when next week is out of the way, the only way is UP!

    HAPPY EASTER EVERYBODY XX

"The stress of waiting for biopsy results may harm your health - even if you're not sick"

  • A colourful day to say the least!

I really did enjoy myself yesterday, the J.O.Y event (read last post) was a great success. I attended my workshops in the day , one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
At lunch time the main room in Victoria hall was transformed into an eating area with stalls selling every 'dance' related item one could need.
I took a few photos as I do, it's amazing who you bump into quite casually.

This guy was simply hanging around while his adult daughter was checking out the sequined bra and belt sets.

And finally...YES! Mr adamantixx I got one for you 88|

After the workshop, I kindly explained to two of the UK north's most popular belly dance teachers that I knew someone who was a connoiser of the female derriere so they, being the good sports that they are, kindly allowed me to snap theirs..purely in the pursuit of art naturally;)

  • J.O.Y

    Kingkev posed the question
"what one thing are you determined to do this weekend"?
My automatic response was "To enjoy myself" and that is what I fully intend to do, tomorrow at least.

Time has simply flown since I last visited Saltaire in October 08 for the
    Jewel of Yorkshire event
J.O.Y (Isn't that a lovely abbreviation for a belly dance event) for that indeed is what it is for the scores of dancers who congregate in the grand Victoria Hall which was built in 1871 as the Home for the Saltaire Club and Institute.
The village of Saltaire is located 10 miles from Leeds and 5 miles from Bradford in West Yorkshire.
Saltaire is a model Victorian village built by wool baron Sir Titus Salt for his workers. The village comprises 22 streets, 850 houses, 45 Alms Houses and occupies an area of 25 acres. The streets carry the names of his wife, children and other family members.
There was a school, a hospital, Congregational and Methodist churches, Sunday school, park, bath, washhouses and railway station and because there were no public houses within the confines of the village, Salt built a Club and Institute for the moral and physical welfare of the community.
The village even had Its own fire station and a relic of those times is a Saltaire Fire Service plaque over the back door of 65 Albert Road. Most of the village remains just as it was when Salt died in 1876. In December 2001 Saltaire was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It will be a different scene tomorrow once again when the rooms of Victoria Hall will be bustling with dancers of all abilities from the complete novice to the professional teachers, there will be workshops of the differing styles of belly dance happening all day, Tomorrow I have enrolled for an introduction to the 'Meleya Wrap technique'
Meleya Leff means the dance of the veil! It's a beautiful Folkloric Dance of women from Egyptian Nile Delta Region.
Meleya Leff, is a big piece of heavier fabric and decorated with ruffles or colorful palettes. It's like a heavy square veil. The dance took it's name from that piece of fabric.
Dancing with the Meleya Leff is flirtatious, bouncy, free and lot's of fun! In this workshop one learns how to be playful, flirty, how to wrap and use the Meleya Leff. Look at the little Youtube vid lower down at the side of my posts and see a cheeky performance of it.

It will be hilarious if nowt else seeing women of all ages, all shapes and sizes prancing around :))

In the evening the main hall is transformed into a concert room and all the top dancers who are teaching at the workshops put on a very entertaining evening of top dance performances!
