  • Friend's only ... an observation

Sometimes blog stastics can be very revealing.

I know that when a person has a main blog and a few sub-blogs, the main one is what others usually look at.
I know my 'Olive and Popeye blog' BELLA'S BENDYS doesn't get many people looking at it but that's not the point of it, I like having it, it's a bit of fun  so after recently posting a 'friend's only post' its viewing figures more than doubled 88|....yes, it had eleven visitors :>> ... and nine of them left a comment ...so thanks for that friends...you know who you are :))

  • Got no warning, early morning

It's been ten weeks since I had to get up early on a Sunday morning and I had to choose the day we put the clocks forward to resume my job in the bakery
I started work at eight so had planned to get up at seven but really because of the time change it was only 6am.
I am not good on a morning and I usually need some quiet time to become fully functioning human being, but not this morning.
I was actually looking forward to going to work, it will be short lived though and after a couple of shifts the novelty will wear off again and I will be pleased that I am now officially a 'seasonal worker' and will only work ten weeks a year which will include two weeks over the Easter period, six weeks in the summer and two weeks at Xmas.
I can just about manage that.

The shop floor is empty at 8 am on a Sunday morning except for the workers beavering about filling up the shelves. I clocked in, wandered down to the bakery and greeted my colleagues with a loud
"Hello Chickadees, are we all alright then"?
I suppose they were glad to see me back as I am another pair of hands to help them with their thankless tasks but they couldn't resist snarling back "Yeah, we're fine"......I let it pass though, after all they haven't had nearly three months off work and most of them have to work consistently to pay the bills whether they want to or not.

The time passed quickly and by the time the end of my shift came at 2 o'clock the mark downs on the pastries and cream counter were underway....just in time for me to purchase a whole selection of goodies (I could never resist a bargain) to fill up my freezer which was uncharacteristically empty after me not going shopping so much lately.
I bought three apple pies,a rhubarb pie, a couple of packs of danish pastries, a luxury bread pudding and as a treat for myself I bought a fresh cream and apple sponge cake which, apart from a few morsels, was devoured the instant I got home.

    That's the trouble with early starts and mid-afternoon finishes, it plays havoc with one's meal times;
luckily t'old man had some left over 'neck of mutton' stew which he finished off for his dinner.

  • DOH!

I wrote my previous post with the new editor in this lovely orange colour and was quite pleased with the result..simple innit it?

Well, yes,   but soon after when I edited the post to amend a sentence it went all haywire and when I reposted it  it was displaying all the html(or whatever it's called).
I remembered to click back on to the new editor when editing but to no avail so in the end I spent an age deleting all the unwanted code and reposting with the old editor.

I might get the hang of it one day but in the meantime if  do a post with the new editor I think i'd better leave it alone once posted..or maybe i'll stick to the old editor for a while longer yet!

  • I'm so excited

I went to the doctors on Monday, my appointment for the endoscopy came through on Wednesday and the endoscopy will be performed next Thursday ...pretty speedy i'd say!

Meanwhile, Bella and her partner went for the house viewing on Monday, they liked what they saw but wanted us to give a second opinion before they made a bid. So yesterday t'old man and myself caught the national express 'Leeds to Manchester' flyer with much haste as apparently another bid had been proffered on the house the very day Bella viewed it so time was of the essence.
We all loved the house, it is a 1930's semi which needs much cosmetic work doing to it but nothing major. The result being that they made an offer this morning and after a bit of negotiation they had the offer accepted.

Good news for Bella and partner as they have been renting what is a quite nice but extremely small apartment for the last two and a half years so the time for this commitment seems right.
Good news for me also as (assuming all goes ahead smoothly) it means that t'old man can get involved in the DIY and keep himself busy whilst being useful.

Now what was the other thing
    OH..I remember

    When Bella, Lulu and myself were in the indian restaurant on Mother's day we chatted about many things. I mentioned to them that my sis couldn't make it to the blog meet in Berlin and that I didn't know what to do now;

"Have either of you two ever fancied a trip to Berlin?" I casually enquired.

"Yes, fancy it" they said in unison

"Well come with me then and see the spectacle of the Berlin Karnavel" I suggested

"We don't want to meet any bloggers" spouted Bella

"I don't know" said Lulu "if I met some in bar then i'd say hello"

You can tell they aren't bloggers can't you  ... although it was Lulu who introduced me to blog.co.uk in the first place.

"You don't have to, they wouldn't want to meet you either" I jested getting a trifle excited

"You two can just party party while I go and say HI"

    "OK then Mam"

Three plane tickets have been booked approximately one hour ago, there's just a hotel to sort out now......................YAY

  • Rant

Isn't it just the way...when something actually goes right nowadays we are so surprised it is like a huge achievement has taken place.
The standards in the service in all sorts of departments is lacking nowadays, it's no wonder the country is going to the dogs.
Most of the time it is simple human error which could have been avoided and simply causes inconvenience.
For instance..On Saturday my youngest daughter and her boyfriend who work all week had booked an appointment to view a house with a view to buying, the estate agent arrived with the house keys, well, a set of house keys, but not the house keys to the house they were about to view.
Naturally the estate agent apologised profusely and explained that a letting agency (who had been previously letting the house) had inadvertently given them the wrong set of keys.
Ok, I know it is probably a genuine mistake but someone has not checked to see that the keys being held were actually for the said property or not. The upshot is they are going to try again tomorrow and have a viewing after work with a different set of keys which hopefully someone has the foresight to check that they are the correct ones this time.

Another example of slipshod work is when I phoned up for an appointment at the Doctor's surgery a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to see a specific doctor and asked if she had an appointment available anytime in the following few days. "Not until Thursday" the receptionist said. This I took it to be the following Thursday which was six days hence.
Thursday came, I went to the surgery, gave my name and lo and behold there was no record of my appointment to be seen for that day.
After searching further she looked up and informed me that it was for the following Thursday that I had the appointment for.
Ok, maybe I was partly to blame in assuming that it was for the Thursday in six days time but surely the receptionist should have made it clear to me on the telephone the actual date it was for...or maybe she simply computerised the appointment on the wrong day 'by accident'
So I made another appointment which was for today and this time I got to see the Doctor.
I only went because on occasions recently I have been having trouble swallowing, it feels like my food has gotten stuck in my gullet, which is something I have never experienced before.
I thought she'd say it was acid reflux or something and send me away with a remedy, but no, she is insisting I have an endoscopy before prescribing anything just to rule out other things.

Personally I don't see that this is necessary but I acknowledge that precaution is a good thing so, so be it
You never know the letter could go astray or the Doctor could forget to refer me... who knows what trivial mistakes could made!

  • The two grandmas

Although the two grans have now passed away
Their names will live on for many a day

One daughter has mam's name as one of hers
the other, her dads mam's name she bears.

So you see on this a most special day
in our hearts and minds forever they'll stay.

One daughter has already bestowed me with flowers and kisses and i'm expecting the other to arrive soon to do likewise.
Then the three of us are going out to yet another indian restaurant (their choice, not mine)
    I feel very lucky

  • More rhubarb nonsense

Earlier in the Photography blog I posted a photo of the rhubarb in my garden,
First day of spring 09 008
a comment from Bushka reminded me of what is becoming quite a well known rhubarb festival in Wakefield, Yorkshire which is a town of commutable distance from me.
I recalled how I visited the Cathedral precinct around this time last year but unfortunately I missed it this year as it was held at the end of February whilst I was in Spain.
I took a couple of photos back then
    rhubarb-stall
It's a pity I missed it this year as the festival seems to be going from strength to strength with Cookery demonstrations, food tasting sessions and a market full of Yorkshire grown produce for sale.
Presenters this year included Richard Holmes of cheesemongers Cryer and Stott giving a talk on, and tastings of rhubarb cheese, I tried some last year and it was tangy but nice.
Heather Copley of Farmer Copley's demonstrated a savoury main course and dessert and former Masterchef finalist and Best Chef in Yorkshire winner Janine Lishman-Peat apparently cooked up some rhubarb dishes.
I don't know who the chefs were last year but I took this pic of them anyhow:>>
    chefs-wake
There are also the rhubarb farm tours where they force the rhubarb through.
I have to admit that the only rhubarb dish I ever make is rhubarb crumble..I love it..some like it with cream;) but I like it the way i've always eaten it ... with custard.

  • Alone in a crowded room

I've gone a bit overboard with the pics again...but who cares!
There's even more in my media

  • There were green men all over Sheffield

It was 10 am yesterday morning when the phone rang. It was one of t'old mans drinking buddies
"Top of the morning to you, will you be in the pub shortly" he alledgedly said
"I thought the live music didn't strike up until about 2 pm" replied t'old man.
"Aye but it being St. Patrick's day we thought we'd get there early and take advantage of the 'happy hour, it starts at 11 am 88|'

Now t'old man's drinking buddies are of the taproom working man's club kind of hardened drinker so it didn't surprise me when he sheepishly turned to me and said "Do you still want to come along for an hour to see the band"?
I tactfully declined..."No, you run along, i'm sure you can manage quite well without me cramping your style"
besides I had another gig to go to.
I had seen that in Sheffield there was the culmanation of a three day irish festival being held in the city centre and being a bit of an 'events junkie' I decided I would go along to that.
I arrived at a huge marquee in the city centre where there would be live bands playing from 12 noon 'til after midnight.
It was busy even then when I arrived at 2pm.
The first thing I spotted was the writing on the back of this ladie's T shirt so I knew I was going to be in for a fun time. She was there with her delightful daughter(she ws such a little cutie), they reminded me of when my kids were small and I would haul them around to all sorts of places with just me and myself myself.
(you need to click on the pic to read the writing)
    St-Pats-day-sheffield-09-006St-Pats-day-sheffield-09-008
The atmosphere was very friendly, after all it was in honour of the irish saint and I chatted to all and sundry. I laughed, they drank, I danced they danced...the atmosphere was brilliant and as the afternoon wore on the buzz in the tent was rising.
Here are some photos I took yesterday afternoon

I left about 7pm as I didn't want to catch too late a train home, by this time it was heaving with funny green characters, the kiddies had been taken home and the liquid brown stuff was swilling the floor already

It was dusk as I left Sheffield and the police were taking up their positions, hopefully this was simply in a preventative role but there was still five hours drinking time to go so I dread to think of the mayhem that could arise later hopefully everything remained good humoured

The last photo came out a little odd but hopefully you can see the Sheffield town hall clock tower at the top, the marquee in the centre and a couple of police officers at the bottom!

  • Fine spring morning

T'old man's dad was an irish immigrant who came to Yorkshire in the 1930's and found work down the coal mine.
His mother's dad was also irish.
Most of his female cousins married irishmen.
He has the look and temperament of a paddy and was raised in the Catholic faith.
He has an unusual surname that is quite rare in England but when we went back to the hamlet where his father was born most of the headstones in the cemetery had his "unusual" surname on them :>>

Now you know all that there'll be no prizes for guessing where he will be this afternoon nor what he will be doing!!
    dancing paddy
There's supposed to be an irish band playing today in one of the pubs he frequents so I may pop along for an hour myself.

Top of the morning to you all

  • Suburbia talk

Do you remember when I was banging on about this last October/November time?

    garden-leaves08-019garden-leaves08-004

The grass verges have been used and abused ever since the lamp-posts were moved back away from the kerbside. T'old man badgered the council into tarmacking the piece directly in front of our window but the side patch was left abandoned for the traffic to run over constantly.

So seeing as I am quick to moan about these things I need to redress the balance 'cos t'old man never gave up his crusade to get something done and eventually a nice young man (the council's official "tree" man) came round to see what all the fuss was about.
At first he professed that it would be highly unlikely that anything could be done, it being the end of the council's financial year and that they were always strapped for cash, but by the time he had finished looking at the next door neighbours hens and the new fence that had been erected and after a cup of tea and succumbing to t'old man's patter:>> he left with a somewhat more optimistic note.

The result being that while I was away two willow saplings have been delivered and planted.88|
    friday-13th-015
T'old man quickly painted the supports white(just so the vans and 'people carriers' can't miss them)
So a round of applause for the nice young man at the council, we've just got to get the grass around the trees reinstated then all will be well in surburbia once more;)

Meanwhile, today, so as to take advantage of the mild weather, I tidied and swept out the greenhouse in order to make way for the seeds that we will be sowing soon. In my computer room awaiting the newly cleaned greenhouse we have already got some capsicum plants and some tomato seeds sprouting.
    spring flowers 012

T'old man said he wouldn't grow tomato plants any more 'cos they make his eyes itchy but the daughter gave him a free pack of seeds she didn't want! ..... so there you are!

  • Yawn

I've been dozing on and off most of the afternoon, i've only done a little bit of housework and been to the supermarket for the weekly shop but waves of tiredness have kept washing over me.

Fair enough, my vocal chords needed a rest after all the chattering Mira, Marika and myself did last night and my digestive system's been working overtime after the consumption of the delicious indian meal I ate but honestly I shouldn't be this shattered

So today has been a lazy day and hopefully I will be full of vitality tomorrow  as i've booked to attend a dance workshop in Barnsley in the afternoon...how's the saying go?
    "No pain , no gain"
    or is it
    "where's there's life there's hope" !:>>

Maybe i'm just a devil for punishment.

  • Good morning..or is it?

T'old man is being a nuisance,
He's insisting on taking the fan in the tower apart as the hoovering didn't help. he thinks I may have to get a new fan.
So if my comp becomes non-functional in the near future, he's to blame as he's never even switched a computer on before let alone repair one!

Still, i'm outta here later today, i'm going to Leeds to meet two lovely ladies, one who I know very well and the other i've only met once before.

Friday 13th, red nose day and a mini blog meet to boot, should be an interesting day.

  • A tale of two wannabee thieves

Yeah, i'm back home and going about my daily business albeit a little distracted in the mind.
My mind keeps wandering off to other lands, methinks it really doesn't want to be here in grimey Yorkshire just now.
Anyhow, there I was in the pound shop, wondering what it was I had come in for. I stood centre aisle and stopped to retrieve my brain(from where I know not), I must have involuntary assumed my 'Greeter pose' as I was suddenly aware of a base-balled capped youth eyeing me.
I stood my ground and didn't flinch, he hurried on down the aisle in response to his friend calling him.
The two of them had a whispered conversation as they looked across at me once more then out of the blue the second chap placed eight giant bars of chocolate on a shelf full of shampoo bottles, winked at me and walked out the door!
The little blighters, they must have thought I was a store detective :))

Then yesterday I had popped into a supermarket after my dance class.
I was tired and somewhat dishevelled looking but I wasn't so 'out of it' that I wasn't aware of the rather rough looking chap with scruffy clothes and unkempt hair suddenly peering over my shoulder from behind.
I jumped, somewhat startled as I was at a fridge choosing eight yogurts for the price of four, I had had the same instinct once before when I was in Madrid, pickpockets have a cute way of pretending to look at the wares you are looking at whilst dipping into your bag.
There was no-one either side of me, just this chap at my rear so I stepped aside and the guy said "you all right love?"
"Yeah" I replied "I just don't like people creeping up at me from behind":##

My Greeter instinct took over again and I just stood watching him as he pretended to fumble amonst the vast display of Muller light yogurts. He eventually turned on his heels and walked off, whilst I cursed myself for the near miss I had just had purely because I had not zipped up my bag after paying the dance teacher for the class.

Either I get a grip and stop being so lacksadaisical (roll that word around) or I had better stop going into town. I'm in danger of becoming that doddery old lady I have so long tried to keep at bay :>>...this should never be, time I went back to work and got my faculties together.
Just remembered though...i'm not a Greeter any more  ..to the bakery I'll be bound in a couple of weeks time.

  • Noisy fan

My computer is making a strange loud humming sound when I switch it on.
Yesterday i'd turn it off then straight back on again and the noise disappeared but today that trick isn't working and the noise remained.

I've been told it is the internal fan...will I have to take the side off and dust it with a feather duster?..or should I let it just die and buy myself one of those pretty pink Sony laptops that Jane has got?

Decisions decisions....oh to be technically minded!

  • Still in Andalucia

I'm just posting a few photos of my friend's house near Antequera so my daughters and sisters can see what it is like..and also for LJ to see where Olive's been;)

The house is at the edge of a rural spanish village and is quite inconspicuous from the outside

  • Viva Andalucia day

February 28th is Andalucia day, it's a bank holiday and a day to celebrate. Andalucia Day came into being thanks to this region’s founding father, Blas Infante, the man whose ideas eventually served to make this region the separate autonomous community it is today.
So, what do people do on Día de Andalucía? The answer is usually found in the heart of your nearest town or city where municipal bands are generally called out to play the regional hymn (el Himno de Andalucia) and speeches are made on behalf of regional traditions and politics.

This year it was raining heavily where I was staying north of Malaga so I declined to venture into the larger towns and found myself in the small rural town of Mollina, near Antequera on the afternoon of dia de Andalucia. Jane was suffering from a chest infection so I set out alone, armed with my little digi camera and went to see the village people enjoy, in their own simple way, Andalucia day.

When I arrived at the covered market area the village people had already congregated at the specially erected bar and there were rows of tables where the rural folk were enjoying free food that the town hall had laid on

Excitement mounted as the musicians and singers(all the way from Seville) took to the stage

  • It's been sunny here today

It is nice to come home and be greeted by some winter sunshine!

The first four days in Andalucia were glorious with alfresco meals in the garden and sitting out in the sunshine but then the rain came and it hardly baited for the rest of the time I was there
Now before you start commiserating(or more than likely laughing)just let me say that the holiday wasn't solely about escaping the british weather, it was about me recharging my batteries and it was about Jane's house.
It is the third time i've visited since she bought it and we went over to see the result of the work that 'Miguel and Miguel' the spanish builders have done on it recently.
It is tile heaven but not just any old tiles, these are pretty andulasian tiles, they're in the lounge, in the dining kitchen and all over the garden!!B).
    I'll post some pics soon.

Jane decided she would return home the same day as me so she had booked a taxi to take her to the airport.
She asked of me "Are you going to insist on travelling to the airport by public transport as you did coming or are you going to ride in the taxi with me?"
What she doesn't seem to grasp is that I like to travel on public transport in Spain..Ok, so it took me hours to get to her house near Antequera from the airport but that was because the airport bus was over crowded and I had to wait for the next one then I missed a connexion at Malaga bus station and had to wait an extra hour but how else am I going to practice my spanish if I don't mingle with the local folk and then there were the little chats I had with the young Belgian man waiting for his connexion to Granada who was excited about visiting his spanish girlfriend for the first time in her native city.
Then there was the chat with the American guy who was waiting for the same bus as myself, he told me about his property developing business in Bulgaria and how he had come that very month to settle in Antequera to be with his spanish boyfriend, he waxed lyrical about his love for him and how theirs would be only the third gay wedding to take place in the civic centre at Antequera when it takes place next September.
You see, these are the little things I like when I'm travelling from A to B, the little conversations that fill in the day.

    Back to yesterday morning..
I decided it would be foolish not to take advantage of the spare seat in Jane's taxi even though it meant I would be at the airport three and a half hours before I needed to be. We arrived at the airport at 9.50 a.m as Jane's flight to Luton was at midday, mine was scheduled to leave at 3.25 pm so I settled in hoping the time wouldn't drag too much.
Pah! just my luck, the flight was delayed by two hours meaning it wouldn't leave until at the earliest 5.30 pm and the only folk I had to chat to were fellow Yorkie passengers who were all biding their time until they reached the hallowed ground at Leeds/Bradford airport!
