  • The inconvenience

    Just what I didn't need!
I was trying to withdraw some money from an ATM machine whilst on my dinner break at work..I thought i'd better leave t'old man some hard cash to last him 'til Saturday so I wanted a couple of hundred pounds.
The machine was working OK, the pin number was put in and the cash was requested. .... So far so good.
The machine started whirring as if counting the money then it went completely dead with a power failure 88|

Apparently the cause of this was a power surge within the store and all their tills, security cameras etc. had also gone down .
After a short time the ATM machine began to reboot itself but had gobbled up my card and failed to dispense the money.

Talk about stressed...I was cursing and that is completely out of character for me so I rushed instore and informed the Security colleague on duty about what had happened, he confirmed that there had been a power failure at that precise time and had the time etc. on record. I was advised to report the card etc. to my bank but as I pointed out to the Customer Services Manager that it was not the card at fault but the power surge that had caused it to happen

So as advised, just after 5 o'clock pm, we phoned the bank help-line to report the machine failure but I found that trying to explain to a nice lady in India that my store had had a power surge at the very time my money was being counted therefore causing the machine to fail was just too difficult, (she couldn't understand me and I couldn't understand her ) which is why I have just finished putting it all in writing in order to hand over personally to the manager of my local branch tomorrow morning.

Bugger, that's my lie-in snookered, will be going to bank in the morning flying to Spain in the afternoon.....catch you next weekend

  • Not a pigsty now

What I like about Jane's house is that it is in a typical small andalucian town that has no tourists yet it is near enough to Antequera and Malaga if one fancies a shopping or cultural trip.

    Nerja-oddments-anuary-2008-0432new-nerja2-038

Although there are some ex-pats living at the other end of town they are mainly brits working as builders, cafe owners or are retired.
Jane's house is at the agricultural end of town with olive groves and vineyards directly at the back.
These pics were taken in early February so I can't wait to see the how the vines are coming along now.
    Burial-of-the-sardine-0112new-nerja2-041

Just a little further down there is a horse ganaderia (ranch) and there is a rough patch of ground fifty yards from her front door where we've spotted horse and trainer practising their equestrian dancing.
I suppose that if I was a late riser there would be one drawback, that is the fact that the farmer begins his daily work at the crack of dawn and my bedroom window overlooks his yard..but that doesn't bother me too much really as ear plugs are a wonderful invention:))
    2new-nerja2-0672new-nerja2-121

I like the fact that I can walk down the street and greet the locals, housewives sweeping up outside their front doors, the kiddies playing table tennis in the square and I like that the shop-keeper knows everyone in the village by name and welcomes you as if you belong.
    Mollina-casa-010Nerja-oddments-anuary-2008-086

Despite the tractor, the days at this end of the town are very tranquil and once you go through the house and into the walled garden at the back then it is a totally different scene
    New-nerja-017Molina-garden-5

The garden covers quite a large area set on three levels and its piece de resistance is the swimming pool where on another level above there is a decked area for sun-lounging. The house used to belong to the father of the spanish lady Jofesa who lives next door...she told us that where the decking is now there was a pigsty for nigh on 40 years :))

So now you all know where I will be when I go missing next week, I doubt if I will get to a computer as the only access to one is via the small bookshop in the centre of town and I doubt if i'll bother myself.
Jane is already in situ and has assured me that the pool is warm and there are no putrid piggy smells just yet!

  • Plan B

I was walking home the other Saturday when I passed two guys with their heads stuck in a vintage car bonnet.
    Lu-002

As I passed I heard one guy say to the other
    "Hmmm..looks like plan B then !"

As I reached the top of the hill I turned around just in time to see someone  hastily finishing  tying ribbons to a less impressive vehicle on the opposite side of the road!

  • Food gift no 2

T'old man's new best friend is a 67 year old chinese lady who just happens to be the teacher of the new Tai Chi exercise class I have started attending.
How come?..one may ask as he personally wouldn't go anywhere near a group or class of any description.
Well, you see for about ten years now we have occasionally passed this lady and her 80 year old husband in the street, us on our way to the bus stop and they returning from their daily walks...we smiled and nodded and that has been that..'til recently.
T'old man is an early to bed and early to rise kind of person and is often sat with a cup of tea or pottering about in the garden even as early as 5.30 in the morning and the Tai Chi lady is also an early bird it seems.
Lately she has been going for walks alone, apparently her husband has had an injury and is remaining indoors more often now but she is being true to her health and fitness philosophy and carries on power walking regardless.
Now that she knows me better from the class we have taken to having little chats in the street and t'old man has quite taken to her as she is extremely chatty and jovial with a wide open face, she came to live here about forty years ago when she married her english husband but she still talks with a very strong accent which is very amusing at times. She loves having a belly laugh as does t'old man (when he's not plaguing me about his boredom and lack of purpose in life) but to all the old ladies who live down down the lane he is jovial and friendly.
on Sunday I had arrived home from work and was settling down to a well earned cuppa when I heard chatter at the gate..it was t'old mn who was returning home from an afternoon at the local and whilst not inebriated he had had a few pints.
Oh dear I thought i'd better usher him indoors before he makes a fool of himself ...but no need as there were the two of them laughing away about nothing in particular, in fact she is so naturally jolly that she didn't even notice that t'old man had maybe had just one or two too many :))
She has suggested that when the Tai Chi class ends for the summer we should go to the park and practice or perhaps I would like to join her on her three times a day walks into the countryside.

So, this morning when he brought Bella and myself a early morning brew (Bella was setting off early to go to Hull)..he came into the bedroom with a two mushrooms the size of his fists 88|.
"Well, would you ever" he said as he showed them to me.
" I was sat in my chair having my cuppa at 5.30 (he had opened the curtains) when Mrs Chan tapped on the living room window with these in her hands mouthing "MUSH-A-ROOOMS, MUSH-A-ROOOMS"
He went out to her and she explained she had already had her early morning walk and had picked these in the fields

So it looks like i'll be cooking mushrooms for supper tonight, at least they aren't like the fungi I spotted in a hedgerow a couple of weeks ago which looked decidedly poisonousDuck-and-walk-pics-025
T'old man's new best friend does a good chinese massage too I'll believe..I have to keep my eye on them ;)
Only kidding of course as she really is a nice genuine person :)

  • Food Gift no1

It's not often we have food presented to us but in the last 24 hours we have been presented with two types of food which were totally unexpected.
Firstly, Bella arrived last night as per usual around 9pm (She stays over most Sundays arriving from Manchester where she spends the weekends with her boyfriend en-route to Hull where she lodges during the week for work). We usually we have a hot drink, chat for an hour or so then go to bed in order to start the week refreshed but last night being father's day she decided she would bring over the fresh mussels which she had left over after cooking a paella lunch for herself and her boyfriend and cook them for her dad.
Now t'old man never eats late and at 9.45 he really wasn't hungry but being the doting father that he his he humoured her and showed enthusiam for the gesture.
She had brought the cooking wine, garlic and chilli pepper and he watched as she lovingly prepared the mussels for him (we had to keep a sharp eye on the vino though) and he actually devoured the lot and enjoyed them in the process...a small gesture but one which meant more to him than any expensive present would ever have

I'll blog about the other food present a little later

  • The years keep rolling by

    Good morning everyone
    Today is my blog birthday

I joined blog.Co.Uk on the 16th June 2005 prompted by an email sent to me by daughter Lulu suggesting I might be interested in an activity called blogging, little did I realise that I would still be active here three years later!
So this morning I went into the garden to feel the sun on my face (yes, there was a brief visit from the sun earlier)
and I noticed that one half of the Yukka plant that I split last year has produced two flower stems which have not yet opened so I thought what better way for me to celebrate my BB than with pics from my garden.
    Mussels-012Mussels-011

The main plant from which this came produced a lovely flower last year so I am looking forward to them blooming

  • Ahem!

I can't believe it is over a week since I posted here!..True, I did a post on The weathercheck blog and one on my
Snippets blog this week but it's not like me not to have come up with some drivel on here, my main blog!
The week has flown by with not much out of the ordinary happening, just the usual, dance class, spanish language group, shopping, cooking etc. Last Sunday I worked my shift as a Greeter but after the interchange I had with the dour Scotsman......Oh didn't I tell you about that did I??....

I was at my position in the foyer ready and willing to say "Hello" to anyone who would respond in kind when a middle-aged couple came in pushing an empty trolley, they were a third the way in when the wife spied a display with reduced household goods at the opposite end of the foyer near to the customer restaurant..she went over to have a look while Mr "Sourpuss" stood with his trolley quite close to me. A minute or two later the wife beckoned him over to look at the goods on display so he promptly left the trolley and crossed over to her.
Just then one of my friendly Porter colleagues, a guy of italian descent who is around my age popped in for a chat. He saw the trolley and went to hold it in order to push it back into the outdoor trolley bay as he thought it was abandoned. " I think that couple over there will be back for that trolley, Mario" I said.
"Oh", he said "we had better hold on to it then to make sure no other customers nick off with it"
So there we were Mario and I, two jolly 59 year olds having a nice chat and a laugh in the way that we are prone to do up here in the Wild West of Yorkshire ..a bit of banter, a joke and a laugh, when dolly day-dream (the wife) turned around and realised that her husband had abandoned the trolley and that we were propping ourselves up on it.
She rushed over to us with Mr Sourpuss" trailing behind.
"Sorry, sorry" she said "I didn't know he'd left it here"
"No worries" I replied..(now this is where I must have gone wrong) as I was still in banter mode I carried on to say " You can leave your trolleys anywhere you like 'love' (yorkshire accent required) but if you leave them in the middle of the foyer then they tend to go walkabout!"
At this Mario and myself had a little chuckle :)) but the couple didn't seem to get the joke
She mouthed "Sorry" once more and he never even made eye contact, he just walked away with the same dour expression he came in with
    .

"Ah well, I thought "it takes all sorts" and thought nothing more about it...until about ten minutes later that is :##.

I was passing the cigarette kiosk when a colleague told me that there had been a chap at the customer service desk complaining about me in rather an irate manner.
Quick as a flash I crossed over to the desk where they informed me that Yes indeed, a man had complained and asked to speak to a Manager.
She had fielded the enquiry and written down the man's complaint..that being that he had never ever been spoken to in such a disgraceful and disrectful way before and all over him having left a trolley for a few minutes. He wanted assurances that the complaint would be passed on to a higher body and that I would be disciplined accordingly 88|
    "Certainly Sir" she had said.
"What" I hissed "ask Mario what occurred"
"It's OK Isadora, we know what customers are like and we know you, it won't be passed on so don't worry"

I was sorely tempted to approach the aforementioned dour Scot on his way out (in my neutral professional voice, of course) but took some deep breaths instead and learnt the lesson from it.
The moral of the story is ...don't call anyone "Love" or try to be witty with anyone unless you know they have a sense of humour!

    Ha!!...now I know why I didn't blog this before..'cos it's pathetic

Well, today my shift was spent in the Bakery where I spent a 'customer free' six hours labelling bread and advising teenagers on the pitfalls of free love  :))

disclaimer: .....although this Scot was indeed dour..I fully understand that not all Scots are ..indeed my lovely departed mother was a full blooded Scot and she was one of the friendliest souls you could ever hope to meet.

  • Orchids for my founder member blog buddies

It was nice to receive the lovely comments in a recent post from Michael St Mark who is one of my earliest blog friends, We both joined blog.co.uk in June three years ago when it was just a fledging web-site and we remarked how many people we had seen come and go over the last three years. There are now only five people on my friends list who I recall from 2005 and these are MSM, Lee954, Puredawn, Deadhead (Bloke) and Menhir.
Of course there are many bloggers who are not on my friends list who are founder members but they are dwindling it seems.
I had never blogged before so I guess the reason I am still here is because I was comfortable here from the beginning so I didn't ever see any reason to leave,
MSM has a lot to answer for as it was he who inspired me to try and take random photos, an art he is most accomplished at but one that I simply have fun with as I only have my cheap little digi camera for equipment.

I discovered this orchid in the powder room of the ladies toilets in the Novotel hotel in Nimes, France last month.

take a look at some of the "bogs" MSM has photographed over on his

Btw...I am so pleased to have made lots of new blog friends since though :) so these orchids are for you...

    ps.
I've just realised that Adamantix and Mr Flighty joined 'bcuk' in late 2005 but didn't realise this instantly as we didn't become blog friends 'til over a year later....also Kiki2u, although I thought she had left blogland as she hadn't posted for a long while.

  • Leeds and Franz Ferdinand

One good turn deserves another and today I managed to redress the balance with my daughter and son-in-law after he had done his good turn by spending a few hours fixing my computer yesterday.

I was in Leeds city centre enjoying the sunshine, I watched an operatic singer busking, I browsed around the wonderful 'Kirgate market' where t'old man always buys his ham shanks (he cooks them too) and we ambled up to the trendy 'Light' complex which houses poshish restaurants, the Radissan hotel and a cinema complex.
We ate lunch in the foyer, in the form of bacon and sausage sarnies being distributed for free complete with tea or coffee, not sure why they were free but I think it was all part of some council initiative or such-like.
We were about to make our way to the open air market which is adjacent to the bus station as this is usually our last port of call and where we buy lots of fruit and veg at bargain prices...e.g three bags of seedless grapes for £1..Ok they will need eating fairly quickly but that's not a problem for me :p...then something rare happened, my mobile phone rang 88|
It was Lulu "Hello mum" she said "are you still in Leeds?"
I assured her I was so she said "Will you do me a big, big favour?"
    "of course" I replied.
" Can you go up to Jumbo's record shop in the St John's centre and buy me some tickets to see Franz Ferdinand"
Apparently she had received an e-mail informing her that the band Franz Ferdinand had just announced that they were to play at the 'Faversham'
Franz Ferdinand is a British indie rock band that formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 2001. Named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria,
The band first experienced chart success when their second single "Take Me Out" which reached no. 3 in the UK Charts The band won the 2004 Mercury Music Prize and two BRIT Awards in 2005 for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act.
The Faversham is a small venue which only holds around 450 people in its largest concert room so the tickets are like gold dust....I had to get up there fast before they were all sold out.
Without further ado I legged it up there and five minutes later I phoned her back with the message "mission accomplished".
She was over the moon as the last time she had seen this band was a couple of years ago at Manchester Arena along with about 11 thousand other fans.

It pleased me that she was pleased and i'm glad I could do this small thing back in return :D
Bella will be at Manchester's Old Trafford on that day the 29th June watching her favourite band Radiohead and what will their poor mother who used to take them both to the rock festivals as they were growing up be doing :??:....well, I will be on my way back from Andalucia on the 28th and the following weekend I will be preparing myself for my first stewarding stint this year at Cleckie folk festival :)) so I suppose I will have to forgive them both for not inviting me to go along with them to their respective gigs..won't I ;)

  • On the pond

    Duck_pond_006[1]

I have posted a selection of pics that I snapped this week of the water fowl I spotted, over on my ISASFOTOS BLOG

  • Been fishing

    Well, not really;)

It has been a little over a week and I was just beginning to get used to my time without the internet, even the fact that I walked the two miles to the library this morning and on arrival found that it was closed until this afternoon didn't phase me ....I just kept right on walking down the country lanes I hadn't walked along before in nearly 24 years that I have lived here.
I passed the large pond once more and today there were numerous lone figures sat fishing,
    54

I saw ducks, canadian geese, squirrels, a red admiral, fungi, reeds, clover and to top it all I had had the pleasure of a companion to absorb this wonderful nature all around...yes  indeed, t'old man had accompanied me on my trip to the "library" which is a very rare occurrence indeed...when the sun shines, there's hope in the land ;)
    2
This fungi was huge and very yellow...I don't know whether it is but it looks highly poisonous!

Then lo and behold my favourite son-in-law (t'only one actually) arrived with one of my favourite daughters and promptly set about fixing my computer....so here I am again folks up and running once more
