  • An elderly neighbour

I've known June for 25 years now, ever since we moved into this house, she lives four doors down the lane.
She is a spinster aged 84 and is very upright and proper with a touch of eccentricity about her.
She was engaged once, to a handsome young man she said, but he died tragically young and she never bothered with suitors after that.
Instead she dedicated herself to looking after her elderly mother who suffered from alzheimers for a very long time before she died about ten years ago aged 96.
Since then June has lived alone generally keeeping herself to herself.
I have only ever been inside her house twice, the first time was when she came and called for assistance to help lift her bed-ridden mother off the floor and back into bed as she had fallen out and the second time was to return a radio to her that she had asked t'old man to repair(she didn't know that t'old man is useless with gadgets and electrical items).

She is still very sprightly for her age and we often pass in the street and stop for a chat, her mental state though is deteriorating fast it seems. A couple of years ago she seemed to be suffering from mild paranoia and is easily confused, she was convinced that someone had bugged her phone and was spying on her, she laments the state of society today and wonders if life is worthwhile.
On Sunday June answered a knock at the door, it was two men, they asked if she remembered them as they claimed to have done some repair work on her roof some eighteen months ago.
Her memory wasn't very clear but they said she still owed them £40 for doing the job so she gave them the benefit of the doubt and gave them the money from her purse.
One of the men then asked her if the work that they claimed to have done was standing the test of time.
She didn't know, so when they suggested that she go down to the bottom of the garden and look up at the roof she trustingly obliged.
The men were at the kitchen door, the purse with £160 cash was on the kitchen table...you guessed it...when she came back up from the bottom of the garden both purse and men were gone.

I know that this kind of thing happens possibly every minute of every day and I know that June has been warned many times about people calling at her door but she is becoming more and more confused, she remembers the times when you automatically trusted everyone and she can't comprehend that people can be so devious.

She walked past our gate today and she was walking as briskly as ever but there seemed to be a far away look on her face, a look that said she didn't want to be here today.

  • You'd better believe it!

    So, it’s official, i'm well cool I am :))
..at least I am if a poll of more than 2,000 British people polled by Cool Brands, a group which provides consumer opinions to companies is anything to go by I am.

OK, well maybe I am not quite as cool as you 'normal' talking folk 'cos The Queen’s English, with 20% of the vote, was voted the coolest which was followed by the Scottish dialect in second place
In third place overall, but the top regional accent, was Geordie. and the infamous Yorkie drawl was fourth!!
Shame for all you uncool folk from Birmingham as the Brummy accent was voted the least cool.

  • Snug as a bug in a rug

About eighteen months ago my media was full so I opened another blog called Isasfotos just so I could put some of my snapshots up there.
Sometime later the kind people of 'blog.co.uk' kindly allocated all of us tons more media space so my need for the other blog wasn't necessary anymore.
I decided to keep it though as I sometimes post on the photography blog under isasfotos.
This caused me to muddle up profiles when I was commenting on a thread in response to XMilly's post on homelessness.
This in turn prompted me to dig out the pics in my previous post as I had provoked memories of many, many years ago when I too was homeless and like the birds appear in the photos I too appreciate the home that I have now got .................even if there is a flamin' great extension being built next door and the satellite dish isn't receiving now and t'old man's arranged for the builders to fell our chimney before it falls down:-/.

    No worries though,
I'm sat here safe and as snug as a bug in a rug (the central heating works)
so what's to be bothered about /:>>

  • A biker, a booby and a ghost from the past

    I suppose that by continuing working at the supermarket albeit one day a week, it does keep me rooted somewhat;
I stay grounded when I get my fanciful ideas that I could maybe disappear into the Sacromonte Caves of Granada and perhaps become a gypsy matriarch casting an eagle eye, in the mid-day sun over the castanet clicking, flamenco dress wearing brood that would be my charge.........Yes, it brings me back to reality when I have visions of immersing myself deep into a Sultan's harem....perhaps I could be a retired concubine or something :-/ i'd be in charge of the veils and essential oils.......

So there I was last Sunday at my usual position in the foyer by the entrance door, when someone tapped me on the shoulder and excitedly exclaimed "hello, how the devil are you!?"
I could tell by her tone that she knew me but I couldn't quite place this rather pleasant, ordinary 'woman of a certain age'.

"You don't recognise me, do you?" she enquired.
"Hmmm, you do seem a little familiar..what's your name? perhaps that will jog my memory"
She laughed, "well, it has been forty years...don't you remember our 18th birthday?"
    "Our 18th" :??:
"Yes, i'm Josie, the one from the village who was born on the same day as you, we celebrated together :>>

The memory of the day gradually returned, I couldn't recall it very well, I remember my 21st birthday much more clearly.
"Of course, Josie" I responded " Erm, what did we do exactly..on our 18th birthday?"
"We met in the village pub then we caught the bus to town where we met up with our mutual friends from the shirt factory with whom we pub crawled about the town and then went on to the Mecca ballroom"
She went on to elaborate ..."I remember spending
half the night in the Mecca powder room bringing up the contents of the barley wines and cherryB's we'd drunk earlier"
"That's it  now I remember!" I triumphantly exclaimed,
this being the the way I always used to spend my leisure time during the years between leaving school and leaving home.

We chatted for quite a while, she told me that shortly after we last met she got married and was still with him today forty years later.
I congratulated her on her achievement and felt duty bound to explain that I had left home around that time and ended up living in a squat in London and that I didn't really feel that I had "settled down" until I was about thirty six years of age.
We talked about our children and how they hadn't turned out too badly considering their mothers were once giddy factory lasses from the pit village...Yes, it was good meeting her.

We had to end the conversation as I was supposedly working and she had left her hubby down an aisle somewhere but she concluded by saying that I hadn't changed a bit, I had the same mannerisms, the same smile, the same voice ....
AH!..the voice ..indeed! once heard never forgotton or so it seems:))
I did explain that during my ten years living in London I had cultivated a passable 'Larndan' accent but that as soon as I returned north and married a broad Yorkshireman the original brogue returned with a vengeance as if it had never been away.

Simultaneously we said Goodbye and in unison we trilled "Happy Birthday" for next month to each other :))

In other news from the foyer

A man in biker's leathers rode up the pedestrianised area from the car park and left his powerful motorcycle outside the store entrance
he walked over to a different part of the car park before returning five minutes later.
The bike was now blocked in by customers walking either side of it towards the doors but he eventually manouvered it to an official parking space, causing much consternation.
Meanwhile I muttered to a woman with two children who was entering the store with words to the effect of "what a total idiot that chap is"
"You're telling me" she smirked "that's my husband!

Booby no 2 was quite literally that.

One of my middle-aged female colleagues was leaving the store and I asked her if she still worked the night shift.
She informed me that she had been off work on sick leave due to the fact that she had eventually been given the breast reduction operation which she had been pushing for for many years.
She then promptly pulled a wad of photos out of her bag and proudly showed me her 'before and after' photos (and the gory bits in between)
There's never a dull moment moment in a crowded supermarket foyer :))

  • happy birthday Mo

I've already sent this virtual birthday card which I have created to 'Pompadour,'
but as i've just discovered this Blingee website (I know it's probably been around for years, i'm always the last) still, I thought i'd tell you about it.

I deliberately chose a figure with a plain background and wanted to keep the 'blingees' simple,
Mo being an elegant gal y'know ;)

I have made other pics with  A LOT of bling but they are of me and t'old man so I can't show them here :))

  • It's all greek to me!

I have been tired and headachy all day but it isn't surprising as the noise levels at the Greek restaurant where myself and 33 other dotty demure ladies dined last night was bordering on high to say the least!
We had a fabulous time though with lots of plate smashing and Zorba the Greek dancing going on, so much so that I quite exhasted myself 88|
I had nothing pressing to do today though so I balanced things out with a lazy day :)
I took my usual quota of photos although I didn't bother taking any video clips as the quality of the sound on my camera is rubbish.
Instead I ventured to browse around Youtube to find a quality clip of traditional Greek dancing for you to peruse upon
There are lots of nice clips I could have posted but instead I couldn't resist posting this one of four students in a flat in Sheffield..I found it hilarious..watch it through and see if it tickles you in the same way:))

  • Good Morning

I have just read about TPF's scaffolding coming down which prompted me to share with you the sight that greets me at the moment when I draw the back bedroom blinds first thing on a morning...
Ok, it's not directly in front of the window, more to the side, but still enough to feel imposing
    IMGP2571
The workmen decided that they could scaffold around the shed and bushes after all..it seems that they simply wanted to take the easy way out by removing them but I guess the cost of a new shed persuaded them otherwise.
The neighbour's baby is due in about six weeks time and she is hoping the work will be completed by then...i'm not so sure!
