I searched the garden for some rust, the best I could find was the rust on this painted metal 'ladle and spoon thingy'
They are fixed to the back wall of our garage and once belonged to a foundry.
T'old man found them discarded and thought he'd paint them and nail them on the wall...the rust won through though...
T'old man laughs at me when I mention my working hours , the reason being that he used to work 12 hour shifts 6 days a week at times and finds it ridiculous that a company will employ someone for so few hours.
Over the years my contract hours have receded from a healthy part-time 24 hour job..down to 18 hours...down to 16 hours and more recently 8 and a half hours spread over two shifts and being able to take lots of unpaid leave in the winter months.
I'm changing over to a 'one day a week' seven hour contract this coming week but I have been snookered as I will be obliged to work every day of the weekend this week.
Friday and Saturday are the last days of my old rota and Sunday is the first day of the new rota ...no sweat though as I am still fresh from my recent time off
I might go to work dressed like this on my last shift when I finally do hang my hat up but it may be a while yet as I still have two colleagues who are 67 and 70 years old
I found this picture of a turquoise mandela whilst browsing in my computer files..
I can't remember where I lifted it from..
Do images like this have copyright?...
It's a bit glary, do you think that it is too much for a blog back-ground?
I will leave it for today then probably take it off tomorrow
Can you tell that there is nothing pressing going on in the Isadora household today
Apart from looking through my computer files for the last two hours I have been watching some council workman microasphalting to the footway outside my house and now i'm going to cook a nice piece of 'Finny haddock' for mine and t'old man's lunch.
A couple of months after the fiesta ends then the various Barrios set out designing and creating the Fallas sculptures for the following year..Some can cost as much as a quarter of a million euros to build.
They are erected in the street about a week before they are burnt in "The Crema" A fabulous web site all about the Valencia Fallas is here www.fallasfromvalencia.com
and an overview here http://www.valenciavalencia.com/culture-guide/fallas/overview.htm
These chaps were putting the finishing touches to theirs and didn't mind me watching them at work(and play)
Two last last pics before I put them to rest
The stepladders in the bottom right hand of the left pic are life size and were used for the artist to put the finishing touches to the work.
The right pic shows the top part of a creation which was the size of a four storey high building.
This may give you an indication of the size of some of these "Fallas sculptures"
Well, it's the rudest I'll ever be getting on blog
These are some of the pics of the more interesting Fallas sculptures that I took in Valencia..They cost thousands of euros to build and they all went up in smoke on the 19th of March.
Would you believe...i've been back at work for two shifts and already I am pressured in to working bank holiday overtime.
All day today from 9 'til 6 to be precise...I could have said "no" but then I thought about the poor so and so who worked diligently these last few wintry months whilst i've been having fun, so I thought they deserved the time off
Enjoy your day folks...here's a pic from the other week to remind me of "gay days and holidays"
I'll be posting my final pics from "the Fallas" tomorrow when have more time
......is what I said to t'old man when I crawled out of bed and saw the scene from the landing window...and a happy Easter to you all..where-ever you are
...and the poor little daffodils and polyanthus hadn't realised it would snow at Easter either but I hope they recover as the snow is expected to thaw fairly rapidly
note to self...."must remember to put camera clock right as these pics were only taken half an hour ago On the 23rd!!!!
It was a good move returning to work on the evening of Good Friday as the store had been chaotic all day, but by the time I started my shift at 5 p.m the great exodus had begun with the majority of shoppers filing out the exit and not, as is usual, filing in.
This was put down to the fact that as it was a bank holiday most shoppers had assumed we would be closing at 6pm and not 10pm as was the case.
This gave me a chance to catch up with the gossip from my colleagues..it seems that people are resigning in droves
Two chaps from the Security dept have handed their notice in, the first is a young lad who has just finished his 'drama' degree, he had been working in the store to fund his studies but when he couldn't find a related job he accepted a position in 'Security' but alas he was refused time off to go to London for a theatre based job interview so he is chucking his Security job in.
The other one is in his early 60's and he is leaving 'cos he has two or three other jobs on the go working at race-courses and doesn't need the stress
The other newest member of the Security team is a 62 year old female who happens to be lesbian....nothing wrong there you'd think...but alas she couldn't handle the endless inquiring questions and banter from the young male porters so there has been a blow up there and two porters are on suspension and she is now off work suffering from anxiety
This only leaves two other members of the team and at a time when they will have to become more shop-floor focussed due to the re-rotaring and scaling down of the Greeters.
I will shortly be becoming a 'one day a week' worker
Since the re-rotaring of the existing Greeters it has been agreed in principle for me to only work on Sundays, not the best of days but better than a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon
..................Next stop............................
We arrived home around midnight last night and we shuddered as I opened the door but we soon got cosy with the heating turned up full.
I had my obligitory "first meal" back home of beans on toast this morning and now I have to prepare myself for the day ahead.
Yes, I know it is Good Friday but today is my first day back at work for ten weeks...should be a hoot eh ...I will be standing at the supermarket entrance until close of store at 10pm tonight. All things considered it shouldn't be a bad shift as I am sure there will be many a tale to tell by the cleaners, the porters, customer service staff and customers alike
We spent the last three days of our holiday in Spain staying in the centre of the lovely city of Murcia, where, every night we witnessed the Holy Week processions in the Cathedral square which was just around the corner from the hotel. T'old man , being a Catholic himself, was captivated, it was very picturesque and emotional at times with thousands of townspeople turning out to witness this yearly spectacle.
Here are a couple of pics I took on Tuesday and a little vid miniclip of mine for you to see.
Oh my...I had forgotten just quite how big Valencia is.
We are pounding the streets every day and at every corner there are sights to behold. I love the spanish friendliness especially at fiesta time and I am having good crack with the natives
Tóld man is enjoying himself too although he did come down with a barking cough on the second day. He swears that the cure for it is a tot or two of spanish brandy so it shouldn´t reign long!!
I am enjoying taking photos of this years "Fallas" sculptures... they are putting the final touches to the erections at the moment and the workers pose willingly.
Oh and by the way...it is 25 degrees heat today!!
There are no prizes for longevity in the blog world so it easy to accept that the average age of a blog is said to be around seven or eight months.
Since I started this blog in June 2005 I often wonder why I carry on blogging especially as I am not a writer or a political analyst etc. in fact all I can muster up to blog about are some day to day snippets of my daily life. Maybe one day it will all seem pointless (to me..it probably does seem pointless to you ) but even so, when two bloggers from my friend's list deleted their blogs yesterday, seemingly without any hints (or did I miss them?) then I wonder why.
Grumpy bloke and Lindow were two very popular bloggers who always had something interesting to say so i'd like to say to them
"Goodbye chaps"...I hope the reasons you've left are positive ones and that things are good in your lives.
Now back to my inane perusals.
....it's bye bye from me for the next ten days, the last time we went to Valencia two years ago was for the "Fallas" fiesta celebrations and I remember blogging about it back in March 2006...so I hope to be taking lots more photos like this
In the frugal tradition of the Isadora household I have set t'old man the task of making some "nourishing" soup with the left-over scraps of vegetables (onion, yellow peppers, left-over precooked carrots and the odd tin of tomatoes from the larder.
I would normally make my soup with fresher ingredients but seeing as we are going away tomorrow it is necessary to remove all detiorating produce from the larder
He has been granted access to herbs, stock cubes, garlic etc and I have given him licence to throw in anything else he deems fit
Meanwhile I will shortly be departing for the darkest depths of Wakefield...to the 'Orangery' to be precise, to support my friend who is making an appearance there in aid of International Women's day.
When I return at approx. 4 pm I will be sitting down to a nourishing bowl of soup and crusty bread....that's the way
How does one pack enough stuff for eleven days into hand luggage only?
T'old man insists on travelling light which is fine by me usually and for four day trips hand luggage is ideal, but this time we will be staying in four hotels in three different cities and travelling by public transport all the way.
Methinks that there is going to be a lot of dripping clothes over the baths in the fancy 4 star hotels we will be staying in
...and don't mention hotel laundry service ..the hotels are costing an arm and a leg as it is and being a frugal Yorkshire person that's a definite "NONO"
Bella is still flitting between her various abodes
She is on the way to our house right now after spending the night in Manchester and tomorrow she will set off early from here to go to work in Hull.
She is loving her new job and up until now she hasn't complained too much about the commuting.
She stayed in Manchester mid-week because herself and her boyfriend have just returned from a mini holiday in Italy.
The last time she visited Milan she was with Lulu and me.
We enjoyed browsing in all the designer shops but browsing was all we did
I came home with one designer item though... a designer shopping trolley, a nice two tone grey with black and maroon touches
Don't ask why ..as I only remember saying to Lulu that it was much nicer than the ones back home and before you know it she had bought it ....it looked very regal on the carousel at the airport when we returned and all my colleagues at the supermarket admired it when I first used it for my weekly shop.
I must say it was probably the daftest thing I have brought home from holiday
although it is still proving very useful four years later
Have to go..my baby has just pulled into the drive and we have lots to catch up on
See you later
