15th January ..arrive in Nerja
16-17th January... Is the date for the traditional fiestas in honour of Saint Antony which originated from the 17th century and is celebrated in 'Maro' a small village just three miles from Nerja.
The villagers build fires and have fireworks displays, there are brass bands performing in the street.
On the day of Saint Antony (San Anton),17th, a midday mass is held in his honour and a religious procession takes place, then at 10pm in a big marquee the villagers celebrate with a village dance (verbena popular)
which I imagine is something like this.
Yes, I know these figures represent more the Latinos, but it is the nearest I could find...and I like it!![]()
I have witnessed the processions and fireworks in Maro twice before but this time I can't wait for the hootenanny
