Hannibal Hoodies

by isadora101 @ 2007-10-09 - 11:49:46

I've been watching breakfast TV again! BBC breakfast today.

New hoodie menace?... just what we don't need as if there isn't already enough intimidation in society already as it is!

Hooded jackets which zip up to completely mask the face are on sale in Birmingham shops, they zip up to completely mask the wearer's face.
Katie Rowlett, her face covered with a Hannibal jacket by clothing company Criminal Damage took to the streets of the city centre

She asked are the new 'hoodies' menacing, and an ideal cover for criminals? Or are they just the latest harmless fashion item?hoodie_clothing16_203x152

While most people just laughed and thought it was simple childish humour, others crossed the street and could barely look into the mesh eyes
.
This following comment would be my first reaction

"Some posed it would interfere with CCTV footage if the hoodies were used in criminal acts"

while others thought that it was up to an individual what they wanted to wear and that it would be rude to judge.

we are already advised to approach "plain" hoodie wearers to ask them to put their hood down if they enter the store with it up as it helps conceal identity.

I hope they don't catch on but I fear they might

haha..more expensive too..I suppose they'll have to more muggings to recoup the cost..unless they nicked the hoodie in the first place

They look a bit spooky to me but if I were younger I'd probably want one. James.

Precisely..they certainly make a statement..especially around halloween time...I won't dare walk home alone after my Friday night shift if they 'catch on' up here!

I don't want to sound as if I'm anti young folk, or anyone else comes to that... these things are an open invitation for trouble though...

Agreed.....I blame the clothing company for promoting them as potential fashion items. They should stick them in the horror department of the fancy dress shops where they belong.

I suppose a ban is out of the question...

It entered my head that if there was an upsurge in crime by people wearing these "hoodies" then there would be reason to call for a ban.
Personally, I think the government should issue one free to all OAPs in the fight against hypothermia, then the fashion would die out quickly if it became normal wear for us oldies;)

What a damn clever idea! Wish I'd thought of that.

I would think that if many of these "hooded" people were walking down the street, then at the very least, people would eye them with suspicion.

mmm.....creepy and no I dont like them 8| and yes......what perfect disguises for people to hide behind and be potential trouble......and yes I think it an irresponsible fashion....

That's the phrase i've been searching for:yes:...."an irresponsible fashion"

mmm......and interestingly I can see a similarity with the Muslim full face headress thing so that will potentially be an interesting comparison....because if these hoodies are banned....then that could kick off another row over the headress thingy.......or am I being paranoid!8|

No not paranoid, no quite possible.
When the fuss about the muslem full face veil was going on before , I noticed that when working at the supermarket, we were required to ask the 'hoodies' to put their hoods down, 'bikers' were required to take their helmets off but we didn't have to ask the 'moslem women' to remove their Burkas!!

well I suppose they dont have a history of being thugs etc....but I guess the hoodies can kick off if they get banned from wearing those full face hoody things citing the Burka thingies....:-/ oh how irresponsible to make the darn hoodies :> !! Plus I can quite imagine them giving elderly vulnerable people heart attacks etc....and they do look intimidating....it is mostly the covers over the eyes isnt it.....?

I was thinking that if they were a designer label they might be expensive so not many could afford them...you know the kids might not even like them.. probably only the 9 year olds.. we might be assuming wrong, they might never catch on

well lets hope not......ghastly!! Unless of course everybody wore them all the time so nobody could recognise anybody else.....:-/.......nah!!!

Some trendy designers who work for a company called 'Criminal Damage' they describe themselves as Alternative Street Fashion, specialising in Street, Gothic and Punk clothing! I have seen some of their other designs and they aren't as extreme as these so let's hope that these are promotional items to draw attention to the company....let's hope so anyway although the BBC did say they were on sale in a Birmingham shop :(

I wouldn't wear those dang hoodies.
